Dear friends, neighbors, and fellow community members,
My name is Cydney Moore, and I am proud to announce that I am running for Burien City Council Position 2.
When I moved to Burien six years ago, my family and I fell in love with the natural beauty, rich diversity, and promise of opportunity of our wonderful city. I’m running because I feel a duty to contribute to the continued well-being of Burien and the people who live here.
In recent years I have become deeply involved in local community service. I currently serve on the Board of Trustees and as Secretary of the Burien Arts Association, as a Lead Organizer for ACLU Burien People Power, and as Co-coordinator of the Burien ICE rapid response team.
Additionally, I volunteer for many community programs and events, including the Community Visions Network, Burien Clean Sweep, Burien PRIDE Festival, the King County Count Us In annual homeless count, and the Burien Severe Weather Shelter, and have campaigned for city and statewide initiatives, and helped craft legislation in Olympia. I also write a series for the B-Town Blog profiling shelter pets at Burien CARES, and have spent several years as the owner of a successful small business.
My priority as a city councilmember will be to improve the quality of life of the people of Burien. I believe food, housing, and healthcare are human rights. 15.2% of Burien residents live at or below the poverty line – well above the state average - which is simply unacceptable, and threatens our people’s access to these basic needs. I believe in a direct, multi-pronged approach to combating poverty, and I will work diligently to bring our city:
- A $16 minimum wage
- More affordable housing
- Strong support systems for the most vulnerable, particularly those at-risk for or currently experiencing homelessness
Like many of you, I am tired of putting my faith in politicians who make campaign promises they don’t follow through on. I’m tired of leaders whose personal ambitions, or allegiance to special interest groups, or just plain apathy, prevent them from taking necessary action to address the most dire problems our community faces. I’m tired of watching our people suffer needlessly, knowing we have the means to help. I’m done hoping for change, and being let down - so now I’m asking you, the people of Burien, to join me in making it happen.
As an elected official I promise to always tell you where I stand, and to commit to transparency in policy-making. My loyalty lies with the people of our city. By working together, I know we can build a brighter future for Burien.
Thank you for your support!
